Yosemite Gateway Art Center is “the Heart of the Arts” in Oakhurst California, southern gateway to Yosemite National Park. YGAC is a cherished cultural resource with a fascinating history.
The story began over 40 years ago with the founding of Timberline Gallery, the oldest Cooperative art gallery in Madera County. Timberline was the cornerstone business that inspired artists to come together, and other businesses to open.
By 1990 the center was all art galleries, including Timberline Gallery, Stavast Studio Gallery, Gudmundsen Gallery, Grimmer Gallery and Ashcraft Photography. A modest shopping center at the north end of Oakhurst became a hub for the arts, serving both local customers and visitors from around the world. Gallery Row became the place to be if you loved art and wanted to experience the local art scene!
Nothing lasts forever, good restaurants, great galleries… and the people that make them successful come and go! Gudmundsen, Grimmer, and Ashcraft galleries closed their doors in the mid 2000s, but a dream was born! in 2005, Stellar Gallery joined the mix. Williams Gallery West joined in 2008. Timberline Gallery closed its doors in 2019, but a new, dedicated group of artists formed a cooperative gallery to replace it.
